Artists: Serve Up Something Sizzling!
Have an inspired idea, but need some funding to bring it to fruition? We’re accepting proposals for our January dinner through Friday, 1/14. Enter your name, e-mail address and idea in the comments field below, then go get your game face on – you could be pitching to the patrons at the next Art Lab Supper Club!

The October eight artists and musicians presented their ideas. The presentations ranged in style from a full-blown live musical performance, to videos, to an artist simply showing their paintings and pitching their ideas. You don’t have to pull together a big, fancy presentation to wow the crowd. The winner, Lauren Howell, simply showed up with a few paintings in hand, and talked through her idea.

Wondering what you need to do to present?

Here’s a recap of the presentations from the October 2010 event:

Lauren Howell (Art Business) – The Winner

Old Town has a very happening art scene that is growing and supporting existing local artists. There is a missing element however, a venue that is open to the public to create art and potentially even artists. I am proposing to start a business that makes creating art accessible for every downtown visitor. I would supply the paint, brushes, canvas and instruction. I see my business providing a place where making art and new friends over a pint of delicious beer as a wonderful way to experience art in Old Town Fort Collins. The proceeds from the Supper Club would go towards purchasing supplies to start my business.
Lauren showed up, paintings in hand, and told us her story. No fancy techology or Power Point presentation. Simple passion sold it!

Rita Gordon (Photography) – Second Place

I’m a photographer who’s scope of work often involves photos of food. I want to produce notecards featuring images of crops growing in the fields of our local producers who donate their harvest to The Food Bank for Larimer County. Text on the back will provide information about both the grower, and The Food Bank. Proceeds from the sale of the cards will be donated to The Food Bank. These food producers are unsung heros in the fight against hunger. I would like to offer them some recognition for their generosity, while further contributing to a cause they hold near & dear to their hearts: ending hunger in this country of abundance. I envision this being an ongoing project, and the seed capital to subsidize the cost of printing would jump start this endeavor.
Rita handed out her note cards on each table, and did a nice, low-tech presentation to the crowd.

Marge Brodahl (Bracelets for SmartBoards)

My nephew is the first HS calculus teacher that Frontier Academy in Greeley has hired and doesn’t have a SmartBoard in his classroom. His school can’t afford to purchase one, so he asked me if I’d raise money to help. Since September 2009, I’ve made hundreds of bracelets and raised $1,700. I need $2,500 to purchase a: SmartBoard, laptop and projector. The Art Lab Supper Club proceeds would complete my goal.
Marge and her nephew gave their live pitch, with a few photos, to the crowd.

William Pilch (Filmmaker)

The William Pilch Project is an eccentric, egotistical, arrogant project to promote me, William Pilch.
William presented a video of his work.

Jesse W Spencer (Multi-Instrumentalist and Singer/Songwriter)

Growing up, I found myself playing every instrument in the rhythm section, allowing me to multi-track in the studio and virtually become a one-man-band. Recently, I’ve finished production for my debut album entitled Brand New Day. The only thing left to do? Manufacturing. The Art Lab Supper Club would be the kickstarter that could allow me to finish this project.
Jesse set up his equipment and performed live music for all 85 Supper Club attendees.

Kevin Buecher (Letterpress Art)

Old Town needs a mobile dance party, and Kevin proposed outfitting his bike, and hitting the streets of Fort Collins to bring music to the masses.
Kevin’s Power Point presentation was filled with great idea, and great photos.

Laura Grossett / Scott Lenaway (Printmakers)

Scott Lenaway and I, Laura Grossett, are printmakers at CSU working towards our Masters degree. We propose to create an environmental experience for our audience that explores gravity and separation. Our plan is to utilize space as a means of engaging viewers. We are familiar with installing large scale exhibitions through experience both with our own work and volunteer work at CSU’s visiting artist galleries. This would be our first show independent from school and a fantastic opportunity as art professionals working towards becoming employed as instructors at a college level.
Laura brought her beautiful artwork in so we could all touch it, and see it, sans technology.
