Join the Art Lab for our first-ever Hands-on Letterpress Workshop.

Workshop facilitators Steve Sedam of Inkpop Studio and Shelby Montross of Meadowlark Creative will relate their experiences as professional designers interested in the creative and commercial potential of letterpress, and will introduce general concepts, terms, and processes involved in creating personal work.

Each workshop participant will have the opportunity to hand-set type, create compositional arrangements of various sizes, and print their works during the two-hour workshop. Participants will be encouraged to collaborate and produce multiple printed pieces.

Participants will have access to:
Kelsy 3×5 press
Pilot tabletop press
12×12 Book press
In addition, there will be an improvised “poster” press similar in concept to a sign-press for creating large-scale works (up to 18×27″ wide).

There will be both metal and wood type of various sizes (from 9 pt. lead type to 4″ wood type) available, as well as cuts and borders to incorporate into the designs.

Participants who have type collections, cuts, or carved linoleum blocks are encouraged to bring whatever they choose to incorporate additional materials into their works.

Workshop schedule:
Saturday, Sept. 25th
The workshop is planned for two hours starting at 2pm. Please be punctual as the workshop will begin promptly at the announced time.

  • The first 20 minutes will be devoted to short personal introductions, followed by an overview of letterpress processes including demonstrations of the equipment that will be used.
  • Immediately following this, for the next hour and a half, participants will be grouped into pairs at workstations. Materials, inks, paper and presses will be shared among the participants; collaboration is encouraged.
  • The final 10 minutes will be reserved for cleanup and exchange of printed works. There is a possibilitiy that we may run longer than the scheduled two hours depending on variables that might arise, but the facilitators reserve the right to bring the workshop to a close when needed.
