A photographer who focuses on beautiful people, places and things

A reception will open Marty Tharp’s three-day photo show from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, November 18, at the Art Lab, 239 Linden St. The show will benefit Project Self Sufficiency, a local organization whose emphasis is to prepare women to lead productive, independent lives.

The show entitled My Favorite Photos continues on Saturday, Nov. 19, 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 20, from noon until 5 p.m. All the photos are for sale, from $5 to $250.

Project Self Sufficiency, a local non-profit, has worked in Fort Collins and Loveland since 1986 to help women and men living in poverty accomplish goals of earning a degree and a well paying job. The organization works through educational access and career planning to provide childcare and housing while the parent becomes self sufficient.

Tharp’s one-woman show will include landscapes, flowers, buildings and people. It will also feature photos she calls “Nature’s Abstracts,” and travel photos from around the world.

She is a traditional photographer who uses a digital camera but does not manipulate her photos.

“What you see is what I saw and hoped to capture to share with you,” she said. She says she focuses on beautiful people, places and things.

While she has taken photos since the 1950s, she only began displaying her work in local galleries and venues after her retirement. She was a member of the Artists Association of Northern Colorado. Centennial Gallery included her photos for several years.

Tharp retired from Colorado State University in 1999 where she taught in the CSU Department of Journalism and Technical Communication. She served on the Fort Collins City Council 2001 to 2005. She and her husband Ken have lived in Fort Collins since 1988.
